Get to know… Aras Shunmugathason

What do you do at MRG?

I’ve recently joined as a Practice Manager, and aim to develop the Middle East side of the business alongside Olly and Chris here at MRG People Asia.

How did you get into recruitment and why?

I got into recruitment purely by accident. I was in charity sales and one day a customer walked up to me and asked me if I’d like to come in for a chat with a headhunting firm and the rest, as they say, is history.

What are you most proud about that you have achieved in your career to date?

Winning my first project when I was a Junior Consultant. The reason I feel pride is because it was at a time when I didn’t have much experience and even recruiting was a challenge. The fact that I was able to pull it off was a surprise to me.

What energises you about working in this sector?

Being able to work with clients to help them achieve their full potential by finding the right people. That is what excites me the most.

What’s the biggest thing that’s changed in recruitment since you started?

The fundamentals are pretty much the same, however I do notice an uptick in tech integration. Digital Ad Generation and analytics are coming into the forefront of how we analyse performance.

What do you think the biggest misconception people have about you is?

People think I’m super serious all the time. I’m quite laid back and a conversationalist.

What’s one thing that most people don’t know about you?

I build robots in my spare time which is another passion of mine aside from recruitment. I also rehabilitate and re-home stray/abandoned dogs in my spare time from various animal shelters.

What’s the best advice anyone has every given you?

Consistency is key to being successful at anything in life.

What three words would your colleagues use to describe you?

Ashwin’s very helpful

And finally, who would play you in the movie about your life?

Dev Patel – the only ethnically appropriate choice.
