What do you do at MRG?
My focus is on people that actually build stuff. I’ve always had a passion for the built environment and like to work with the senior teams within contractors, consultants and the like, in the hunt for key directors and individuals that will have an impact on the bottom line.
What are you most proud about what you have achieved in your career to date?
I’ve had a nonstandard career; I built up and sold one business and then built up another. But what am I really proud of… I’ve positively changed the lives of clients, their customer, and many candidates for the better, and my career has put my 3 girls through university.
How did you get into Construction and built environment recruitment and why?
A group were trying to sell me their services and the conversation turned 180 degrees to the point that they then approached me, and the idea appealed.
What energizes you about working in this sector and with Construction directors?
Clients hanker for quality of service and individuals at senior levels are straight talking and generally forward thinking
What’s the biggest thing that’s changed in recruitment since you started?
I’m old enough to remember Noah building the Ark and have seen the industry develop into a more dynamic and progressive sector. The industry is less testosterone driven and more cerebral. The people running key businesses are now more talented and forward thinking and have put people at the centre of their business models.
Construction is now far more balanced in terms of people equality and I love that.
What do you think the biggest misconception people have about you is?
As recruiter, many people expect me to be money driven and have a desire to be in the limelight. Nothing could be further from the truth. Money is a by-product of delivery, do a good job and people will happily pay you to come back again and again. As for being flash… I’m happy in the shadows. Public praise is a fate worse than death, and “flash” labels drive me to despair… I mean, who really cares?
What’s one thing that most people don’t know about you?
A question that is an Oxymoron! Well here are two.
I’m a playwright of international standing with my plays being performed all around the world. So when I’m dead and gone I’ll still be making people laugh!
I had quite an interesting side-line in the army for a few years…well it got me out of the house. Get involved they said…you’ll travel the world, meet interesting people and then get shot at by them. Mind you on the plus side…I’m still here and they aren’t!
What’s the best advice anyone has ever given you?
Without a doubt…. F***ing run and keep your head down!
What three words would your colleagues use to describe you?
And finally who would play you in the movie about your life?
Not this one again… I tell you if that Brad Pitt phones me one more time begging to make that movie…I may give in and let him
