With more than 8,000 staff, 38,000 students, and a turnover of c.£700m, the University of Birmingham is a leading Russell Group University. Our heritage as the UK’s original ‘red brick’ and civic university, is combined with one of the most compelling and ambitious agendas in higher education. Quite simply, at Birmingham we make things happen.

Home to world-class researchers whose work on everything from new cancer treatments to harnessing the power of atoms for future energy sources makes a real difference to people’s lives - the university provides innovative solutions to big problems. We think, recruit, and compete worldwide. The stunning, 300-acre Edgbaston campus is iconic.

This is a key time for the University with investment in the main Edgbaston Campus in the UK and in their new overseas operation in Dubai. This investment includes substantial technology investment over a 6 year timeframe, to support the core areas of teaching, research and University operations (finance and HR). There is also investment into digital technology to improve and enhance the student journey for the 38,000 students. Transition to Cloud is underway and approximately a third complete and will enhance the current mixed infrastructure, including modern & legacy systems and the Oracle HR & finance function.

As Director of IT Services you will support the university CIO in Strategy and Planning for the investment into key digital services. Working as an evangelist for new technologies, building key stakeholder relationships and promoting technologies that will enhance services across the University Estate. You will also have line management responsibility for the Head of Research Computing, Head of Infrastructure and Head of Service Delivery which accounts for 60% of the IT function at the University, driving a culture of high-quality service ensuring that services are developed and run in a cost-effective manner. This will be achieved utilising suppliers and third parties as well as in house teams to deliver efficient and high performance through a blended approach.

We are seeking individuals with demonstrable experience of leading IT operational delivery within a large and complex organisation including infrastructure, applications and service management. The successful candidate will have a broad knowledge of IT, including networks, infrastructure, end user computing and cloud with the ability to lead, manage and motivate a large team. You will possess the gravitas to operate successfully with colleagues at the highest institutional level and your excellent interpersonal and communication skills will allow you to build positive relationships, work effectively with, and prepare high quality papers, reports and presentations for both specialist and non-specialist staff at all levels both within IT and across the wider university.
