The University of Sussex is a leading higher education and research institution. The first of the new wave of UK universities founded in the 1960s, receiving its Royal Charter in 1961, Sussex is a successful, growing University with a top-20 place in the major UK higher education league tables. The University has a beautiful and diverse estate located in Falmer, to the east of Brighton and Hove. It is situated in the South Downs National Park and has amongst its buildings a core heritage estate designed by Sir Basil Spence.

The School of Life Sciences is at the forefront of research in the biological sciences in the UK, coming in the top 10 in the REF 2014. It is one of the largest Academic Schools in the University with a Faculty of nearly 80, and approaching 200 Research Fellows and Technicians, an annual research income of >£13 million and an annual turnover exceeding £27 million. Over 600 undergraduate and postgraduate students (including 50 PhDs) and admitted each year onto a broad range of degree courses in biological, biomedical and chemical sciences.

The School of Life Sciences is seeking to appoint a Head of Technical Services (Deputy Chief Technical Officer) to lead, shape and deliver a high-quality technical support service to meet the teaching and research objectives of the School. Working closely with the CTO you will lead, manage, support and develop a flexible team of technical staff within the School who support all aspects of teaching and research.

We are seeking an individual with proven experience and track record of managing the technical services provision across an organisation of significant scale and complexity. You will have strong leadership and management skills and will have experience of change management and transition preferably relating to a change in facilities provision.

Experience of working in an environment with similar characteristics (stakeholder groups, types of facilities and activities, operating model) to those found at the School of Life Sciences would be particularly advantageous.
