About the role

MRG Interim are currently supporting our client, a research-led public sector organisation in London, to recruit an Interim Fire Safety Manager. This is a six-month assignment with the option of going from temporary to permanent. This role covers a large portfolio of nearly 100 buildings ranging from listed Grade II heritage, academic, halls of residence, sports facilities and office space.

Background

Our client has identified the need to quickly bring an interim resource on board to take over from an existing member of staff. The role will liaise with internal and external specialists, trade unions and other employee representatives and the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) to develop estates policies and procedures that meet the requirements of the law and best practice.

The Fire Safety Manager will act as lead competent person to assist the business in undertaking the measures necessary to comply with fire safety legislation and current health and safety policies. This role is responsible for delivering Fire, Health, Safety and Risk Management training to meet the needs of staff and stakeholders of all levels across the organisation. You will promote legal compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act and regulations. The role holder will report to the Head of Health and Safety.

Main Responsibilities

  • Advise staff and management on the legal and practical requirements for fire safety, including fire prevention and protection in respect of buildings and activities;
  • Responsible for Fire Safety policies, procedures and technical notes to ensure that the fire safety management system practices comply with all aspects of the Fire Safety Order 2005 and related fire safety legislation and recognised codes of practice.
  • Undertake Fire Risk Assessments across the organisation’s premises and/or occupied spaces and monitoring responses and action plans.
  • Responsible for developing robust, safe, compliance and effective Fire Strategy for all locations.
  • To implement and manage a fire safety management system to meet reporting requirements.
  • To monitor the service effectively to demonstrate a safe service is being delivered.
  • To demonstrate continuous service improvement and modernisation of service delivery and structure regards to areas of responsibility
  • Develop and lead on evacuation strategies, including the lead on fire drills, fire marshalls, emergency plans and Fire Safety training.

You will bring

As an experienced Fire Safety specialist from a public sector estates background (either consultancy or client-side), you will be responsible for the following key areas:

  • Graduate member of the Institution of Fire Engineers GIFireE, OR relevant fire safety professional qualifications OR working towards an equivalent qualification
  • Third party certificated as either a fire risk assessor or auditor, through the Register of Fire Risk Assessors and Auditors (IFE) or similar or working towards certification
  • NEBOSH Management of Health and Safety
  • Thorough up-to-date knowledge of fire safety legislation and best practice
  • Knowledge and experience of fire safety (preferably inc. COSHH and laser safety)
  • Experience of carrying out Health & Safety risk assessments and / or accident/ incident investigations
  • Thorough up-to-date knowledge of fire safety legislation and best practice and working knowledge of H&S legislation

You will drive change within the currently high-performing Facilities and Estates team. You will be offered a six-month contract with the possibility for the role to go permanent.
