About the role

MRG Interim are currently supporting our client, a research-led public sector organisation in London, to recruit an Interim Business Manager (Estates and FM). This is a six-month assignment with the possibility of extension. This is a flexible role with remote working considered, alongside some time spent on site when required.


Our client has identified the need to quickly bring an interim resource on board due to an increase in workload due to a number of estates and capital projects coming online simultaneously. With the existing staff at capacity, you will be working with the senior estates team to project manager a new folder / file structure on SharePoint, managing the transfer of information from the existing server to a new SharePoint system. Additionally, our client is looking to establish an Estates & Facilities Internet and Intranet – there is some existing information on the intranet, but it needs refreshing. This will require you to liaise with each of the senior estates team to build a slide deck of what needs to be displayed and available for both internal and external stakeholders.

The Interim Business Manager will act as a senior leader within Estates and a member of the SMT, you will be responsible for service improvement development and performance, portfolio and programme management including finance oversight, stakeholder engagement and communication, staff development and social value. The role requires strong programme management and governance experience, with the ability to build relationships, influence change and work across boundaries with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders.

You will bring

The successful candidate will be highly organised with a strong knowledge of governance, project management and implementation within complex, fast-moving, deadline driven, business environments and have a good understanding of managing large and complex budgets. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are vital, you will be resilient and will have the confidence required to work effectively with senior managers at the highest institutional levels.

As an experienced Business and Project Manager from a public sector estates background (either service provider or client-side), you will be responsible for the following key areas:

  • Knowledge and experience of managing complex matters, navigating uncertainty, prioritising workloads, and delivering on time and on budget.
  • Experience in the planning and delivery of major capital projects
  • Experience of building effective, trusting partnerships, working across organisational boundaries to lead and motivate formal and informal teams.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) and the ability to represent the University internally and externally with confidence, diplomacy and authority.
  • Knowledge and experience of governance and strategic planning, with the ability to synthesise data and outline concepts into clear plans and recommendations
  • Outstanding planning and project management skills, including experience of financial and risk management.
  • Proven record of formulating innovative solutions and practical implementations to deliver strategic objectives.
  • Experience at a senior and strategic level within a University or similarly complex organisation.
