We are working with one of the UK’s leading Construction and Civil Engineering Contractors (Tier 1) to build a Business Performance team based in North West London.  Working across a range of flagship infrastructure projects, the Business Performance Engineer will be responsible for assessing, implementing and facilitating LEAN processes to improve overall performance.

Reporting to the Head of Business Performance the Business Performance Engineer will support the use of a Lean approach across the Business, including:

Implementation and support of Lean tools on projects for Design and Construction;

An excellent understanding and experience of applying Lean techniques and be able to train and coach these;

Facilitation of Lean sessions, including collaborative planning and Lean Improvement Projects;

Management of the Lean Project database.


  • Promote and Support the use of ‘PACE’ tools: Collaborative Planning, Look Ahead, Daily Control (Last Planner) and Eliminate Waste (Improvement Projects);
  • Support the Project Managers in promoting and embedding an improvement culture so that Lean techniques are used consistently across projects;
  • Advise site teams on development of their Project Lean Implementation Plans;
  • Set up the PACE elements on new projects for both Design and Construction and support the teams whilst the techniques are embedded;
  • Support the of existing use of PACE elements on current projects through auditing and coaching;
  • Facilitate and Support Tender and Design Development collaborative planning sessions;
  • Administer the Lean Project database, assisting in assessing improvement ideas, updating progress during project implementation and production of case studies from completed projects;
  • Identify, assess and improve business processes using Lean techniques;
  • Assist with undertaking project Lean Maturity Assessments;
  • Support the business in preparation for external Lean assessments including Highway England’s annual HELMA (Highways England Lean Maturity Assessments);
  • Assist with reporting required by the business on key successes, lessons learned and the business benefits accrued from the improvement initiatives;
  • Learn from lean practices in both the construction industry and other sectors such as manufacturing and service industries;
  • Promote and share best practice across the company and the wider group;
  • Promote and share best practice with Key Clients and other framework contractors, designers and the Supply Chain.

Person Specification:

  • Qualified to degree level in an engineering discipline (ideally Civil Engineering or Construction);
  • At least 3 years' experience facilitating LEAN Processes;
  • Six Sigma training;
  • Ideally some construction/civils experience.
